Tahiti acid lime is an important citrus crop in Brazil. Some viroids reduce citrus tree growth on different rrotstocks and may be used for tree size control animed at the establishment of orchards with close spacing that can provide higher productivity than conventional ones. To study the effects of citrus viroids inoculation on vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality of 'Tahiti' acid lime [Citrus latifolia (Yu. Tanaka) Tanaka] grafted on six rootstocks (main treatments): 'FCAV' and 'Rubidoux' trifoliate orange cultivars [Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.], 'FCAV' and 'Limeira' Rangpur lime cultivars [Citrus limonia Osbeck], 'Carrizo' citrange [C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.] and 'Sunki' mandarin [Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tanaka] and inoculated with three viroids isolates (secondary treatments): [Citrus Exocortis Viroid (CEVd) + Hop stunt viroid (HSVd - CVd-II, a non cachexia variant) + Citrus III viroid (CVd-III), [Hop stunt viroid (HSVd - CVd-II, a non cachexia variant) + Citrus III viroid (CVd-III)] and control [no inoculation], an experiment was set up in February 2001, in Bebedouro, São Paulo State, Brazil. The experimental design was a split plot design in randomized blocks with six main treatments (rootstocks) and three secondary ones (viroid inoculation) with three plants per plot and one per subplot. Inoculation was made at field ten months after planting by bud grafting. The trifoliate oranges rootstocks induced less vigor. Both isolates reduced tree growth (plant height, canopy diameter and volume). Trees not inoculated yielded better (total fo four harvests) than inoculated ones but the productivity (Kg/m³) was the same in the three harvests. Total soluble solids were higher in fruits of trees inoculated with the CEVd isolate and acidity was higher in both viroids treatments. No interaction between rootstocks and isolates occurred for drought tolerance. Rangpur lime clones and Sunki mandarin trees were the most tolerant to drought. Trees inoculated with the CEVd isolate were more susceptible to water stress than control ones, independently of the rootstock. There is no agricultural advantage in the use of such citrus viroids isolates for 'Tahiti' lime plantings. MenosTahiti acid lime is an important citrus crop in Brazil.
